Distribution line types

Distribution lines include four types:

  • Supply main
This is the pipe that runs between the interconnection with the transmission system and feeder mains. It operates at a pressure between the high-pressure transmission and the medium-pressure feeder main. It may also be used to provide a direct connection from the transmission system to a large industrial customer or a power plant.
  • Feeder main
This is the pipe that connects the supply main (at a regulator station) to distribution mains.
  • Distribution main
This is the pipe that snakes through the service territory bringing gas through neighborhoods and business districts.
  • Service line
This is the line that connects customer meters with the distribution main.

After the meter, gas is carried by the customer-owned fuel line that serves specific equipment or appliances within the customer facility.
